Terrell M. Johnson

LT. Terrell Johnson was born on October 7, 1962 to the union of John I Johnson and Elaine Hunt- Johnson. Terrell was a native of East Saint Louis, Illinois. He was a graduate of East Saint Louis Senior High School where he ran track and still holds numerous track records. Terrell married his high school sweetheart Lori in December 1982. They were married for 35 years and blessed with 3 beautiful children Shamisa, Chamonte and Shakayla. LT. Terrell Johnson served 31 years dedicated years in the U.S. Navy. He was a lover of knowledge and believed in the power of education. Throughout his career, he earned his B.S. in Workforce Education and M.A in Urban Education and a M.S. in Community Counseling while on active duty. During Terrell’s Military career, he deployed with several combat tours to Iraq Freedom, Persian Gulf, United Haiti Relief and the 911 Terrorist Attacks. Terrell earned his surface Warfare Insignia. His Military awards included the seven Navy Commendation Medals, five Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and five Navy Good Conduct Awards. LT. Terrell Johnson was beloved by fellow shipmates, co-workers, neighbors, and ROTC students at Riverview Gardens School District. He coached Track students at both Riverview Gardens and East Saint Louis Senior High School. He was well-known for his reputation for giving people nicknames, helping others in their time of needs, and many affectionately called him TJ 618. LT. Terrell Johnson believed in giving back to the youth which included the Big Brothers, Big Sister programs and was a mentor for troubled teens. He assisted his students in applying for and gaining scholarships at Riverview Gardens High School. Terrell worked as a Case Manager for Hoyleton and Children and Family Services. He also worked at the St. Clair Juvenile Detention Center. He was an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the Free and Accepted Mason (PHA). On October April 2, 2018 LT Terrell Johnson went home to be with his Heavenly Father. He was preceded by his mother, Elaine Johnson. He will be truly missed by his family and many childhood friends. He leaves to cherish his memory- devoted wife, Lori Johnson, three children, Shamisa(Robert) Hughes; Chamonte (Briana) Granger; and Shakayla (Cedric) Jackson. Seven grandchildren – Robert Hughes Jr. Monte Johnson, Breon Granger, Royal Hughes, Josiah Johnson, Reign Hughes and Londen Granger. Terrell is survived by his father, John I. Johnson; two brothers, Tyrone Johnson and Bryant Johnson; two sisters, Petra (Ronald) Cooper and Cheryl (Larry) Foley and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and his special service dog and companion que Dawg Johnson.
